Residents to comment on proposed temporary subway closures in Wynberg and Southfield

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is calling on residents and road users in the Wynberg and Southfield area to submit comments on its proposal to implement the temporary closure of certain subways. Read more below:
Residents have until 4 December 2025 to comment on the City’s proposal to implement the temporary closure of the following subways:
• Piers Road subway in Wynberg
• York Road subway in Wynberg
• Tiverton Road subway in Wynberg
• Naruna Crescent subway in Southfield
The City’s reasons for proposing the temporary closures include factors such as the:
• Illegal use of the subways
• Vandalism of infrastructure: pumps, electrical supply, lighting
• Illegal occupants
• Unsafe conditions where robberies take place
‘The City has considered the nearby alternative routes and we believe that the temporary closure of these subways will improve pedestrian safety in these areas overall. We encourage residents to please submit their comments or suggestions to the City before 4 December, in order for our teams to consider all your valuable input,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

• Submit written comments at the Subcouncil 20 office: Alphen Centre, Constantia Main Road, Constantia
• Libraries: Plumstead Public Library; Wynberg Public Library and Southfield Public Library
